6 Tips to Embrace Life Changes
We all lean on routines. They give shape to our days and make life feel manageable, predictable… steady. There’s comfort in the idea of “if it ain't broke, don’t fix it.” But sometimes something does feel off. Life starts to feel stalled out or repetitive, and that quiet sense that things should be different gets harder to ignore. In short, we know we need to make a change.
Even so, change has a way of tightening your chest before you take the first step. It’s scary, even if it is a foundational component of growth and personal development. The title of a popular book, “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway”, by Susan Jeffers, captures the attitude of facing our anxiety about change by bravely stepping outside our comfort zones, letting go of old patterns and habits, and opening ourselves to a world of new possibilities.
If you find yourself hesitating at that edge, the following strategies can help you move forward with more steadiness and confidence.
Strategies for Embracing Change
Accept That Change Is Inevitable
Ironically, the only constant in our lives is change. Every second of our lives, change happens all around us, even if we are not aware of it. Accepting that change is inevitable becomes a cornerstone of successfully handling life’s transitions.
Such acceptance, however, is challenging for most of us. We cling to the illusion that we can prevent change, only to end up feeling full of self-pity and resentment that things aren’t going as we hoped or planned. Surrendering to the reality of change, while difficult, opens avenues to growth we never imagined possible.
Recognize What You Can and Cannot Control
Consider the famous Alcoholics Anonymous Serenity Prayer:
"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference."
Most of us can agree that in our lives, there are both things that we can control and things that we cannot. Some things are easy to discern. For example, we know we can’t control the weather, but we can choose to carry an umbrella.
However, there are many situations in which the line between controllable and uncontrollable is blurry, hence the wish for the wisdom of discernment to see more clearly the boundary between the two. A good way to cultivate this wisdom is to be brutally honest with ourselves. If we fearlessly examine our underlying motives in the light of humility, we’ll be more apt to develop a more objective assessment of controllable versus uncontrollable.
Ask For Support
Confide in your support system and let them know about your struggles. These people will be there for you, making it easier to endure the life changes that fall on your shoulders. Other avenues for support include clergy and psychological counselors. They can offer listening ears and time-tested therapies to help address the turbulence of change.
Look For the Bright Side
Each of us has a unique perception of the world around us, and our attitude will determine if we see life as mostly dark or mostly bright.
Some say pessimism is the most logical point of view because if things go wrong, pessimists say, “I told you so,” and if things go well, they say, “Well, that went better than expected.” All kidding aside, research has shown that people with a persistently pessimistic outlook tend to have more health problems, including depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and other cardiovascular issues.
A negative attitude toward inevitable life changes can be hard on both body and mind. What if, instead, we deliberately cultivated a positive mindset? This means that, despite whatever changes take place, we do not automatically label them as bad but work to find the silver lining.
For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us were isolated and had less face-to-face contact with our usual network of family, friends, and acquaintances. A silver lining during this time was having more opportunity to focus on ourselves and our relationships with those around us.
One way to focus on the bright side of change is to cultivate an “attitude of gratitude.” In this way, we train ourselves to look for things to be grateful for throughout our lives. Experts cite studies that show benefits like:
Reduce everyday financial noise. Boost Checking helps keep routine expenses organized, which makes it easier to focus on daily habits that support a calmer, clearer mind.

Think Of Everything as a Learning Experience
Humans seem geared to be lifelong learners. A 2016 Pew research study found that 73% of respondents described themselves as such. That’s good news because lifelong learners are better equipped to cope with change because it:
Take Time for Yourself
It can be something as small as cooking your favorite dish, writing in a journal, or as big as taking an extended vacation on your own. This time helps you feel centered, no matter what changes are taking place. Think about what makes you happy and what energizes you, and make space for it so you are better prepared to accept change.
Moving Forward
When something no longer fits, paying attention is the first step. Responding with openness instead of resistance creates space for growth, new direction, and unexpected opportunity.
Change can be scary, but also beautiful. Consistency and patience are key to shifting your mindset and accepting the changes that come your way.
