But once the novelty wears off, all that unstructured time can present an unexpected question: *What do I do now?* Without the routines and relationships that came with work, it's easy to settle into tedious patterns. Yet retirement also offers something that was often in short supply during our working years: the freedom to experiment. Trying something new doesn't have to mean climbing a mountain or moving to another country. It might mean taking a class, volunteering, learning an instrument, joining a walking group, trying pickleball, or finally tackling a project you've postponed for years. Here are eight reasons why trying something new can make retirement more interesting and rewarding. ## Meet New People One of the most exciting rewards of trying something new in retirement is meeting new people. For many of us, our friend group revolves around family, work, and the neighborhood we live in. Yet, what if you embarked on new activities and pursuits that put you in contact with people who share your interests more closely? For example, if you volunteer for a cause you believe in, other volunteers may share the same feeling about the organization. With this added connection, making new friends becomes much easier. ## Boost Your Confidence When you start trying new things in retirement, there is no guarantee that you’ll like the new endeavor, or you find that it doesn’t meet your expectations in some other way. However, if your attempt does work out, it could give you a big confidence boost and make you feel the effort was well worth it. Yet, what if things don’t go the way you hoped? Maybe you've always wondered about photography, woodworking, genealogy, birdwatching, cooking, learning Spanish, or playing the guitar.
